We once sourced fabric from a mill that offered reactive-dyed fabric at $14-15/kilo vs our normal preferred mill, which was offering a 5% higher cost and a 10-15 days longer delivery schedule. This new mill was not wrong. They did use the same quality of yarn and did use reactive dyes, but the fabric bled after three washes and failed the colour fastness test that we always do before the bulk fabric is taken in-house.


We realised that dye chemistry isn't the only variable. The quality of washing off unfixed dye, enzyme treatment, softening, compacting and heat setting often matters more than the dye itself.


It could have been a costly mistake, but we were happy that we caught it in time.
