When fashion founders start planning a new collection, one question often comes up:


Are synthetic fabrics automatically less sustainable than natural fibres?


The answer is not that simple.


We often look at the fibre label and decide what is “eco-friendly” and what is not. But sustainability involves much more than that.


How long will the garment last? 


Is a garment worn for five to ten years really less sustainable than one that lasts only one or two seasons?


We also need to consider the bigger picture:


  • How much water does the fibre require?

  • How much energy goes into making it?

  • What manpower and infrastructure are needed to produce, process or recycle it?

The garment determines which properties matter.



The Right Fabric Depends on the Use Case


Sustainability should not mean choosing a natural fibre for every garment.


Different garments need different fabric properties. A fabric that works beautifully for a relaxed linen shirt may not work for yoga leggings or an athleisure top.


Think about what the garment needs to do.


For yoga, Pilates and athleisure, the fabric may need to offer:


  • Stretch and recovery so the garment moves with the body and returns to its shape.

  • Moisture wicking to move sweat away from the skin.

  • Quick drying so the garment does not stay wet during or after a workout.

  • Durability to handle repeated washing and regular movement.

  • Shape retention so leggings and fitted tops do not lose their fit.

  • UV resistance for outdoor activities and sportswear.


This is where technical fibres such as polyester, nylon and elastane can make sense.


For example, nylon can provide durability and a smooth handfeel, while elastane adds stretch and recovery. Polyester is widely used when moisture management, quick drying and durability are important.


That does not make these fibres automatically sustainable.


It means the sustainability question should come after the performance question:


  • What does the garment need to do, and

  • which material can deliver that performance while reducing its overall impact?


For a fashion startup, choosing the right composition can also mean making a garment that lasts longer, performs better and gets worn more often.


That matters too when you look at sustainability.


Recycled vs Virgin: Is Recycled Always Better?


Recycled fabric sounds like the obvious sustainable choice. And in many cases, it can be a better option than virgin synthetic fibre.


But recycling does not automatically mean better in every situation.


The quality, feedstock and recycling process all matter. A recycled fabric may also feel different or perform differently from its virgin counterpart, depending on the fibre and how it has been processed.


There is a lot happening before “waste” becomes a new fibre.


What happens to recycled synthetic waste?


Depending on the material and recycling method, the process can involve:


  • Collection and grading of waste based on fibre type and quality.

  • Cleaning to remove dirt, finishes and other contaminants.

  • Sorting and deconstruction when materials need to be separated.

  • Processing or regeneration to turn the recovered material into usable fibre or polymer.

  • Spinning and fabric production to create the final textile.


That additional processing needs technology, skilled manpower and infrastructure. It can also make recycled materials more expensive.


So, when comparing recycled vs virgin polyester, don't look only at the word “recycled.” 

Look at what was recycled, how it was recycled and what the final fabric delivers.


Pre-consumer vs post-consumer: What's the difference?


This is another detail fashion startups should understand.


Pre-consumer waste comes from manufacturing. Think fabric scraps, cutting waste or production leftovers that never reached the consumer.


Post-consumer waste comes from products that have already been used and discarded, such as old garments.


Both can be legitimate recycled inputs. But they are not the same thing.


Here is an interesting industry reality: less than 1% of the global fibre market in 2024 came from pre- and post-consumer recycled textiles. Most recycled polyester still comes from plastic bottles. In fact, around 98% of recycled polyester feedstock came from PET bottles in 2024.


That means textile-to-textile recycling still has a long way to go.


The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) verifies recycled content and tracks certified material through the supply chain. It accepts both pre-consumer and post-consumer inputs and includes third-party auditing and chain-of-custody requirements.


That's why we always recommend looking for legit GRS-certified recycled synthetics or blends, rather than relying on a supplier simply calling something “eco-friendly.”


For a startup, the goal isn't to choose recycled fabric because it sounds better on a label.


The goal is to find a recycled material that is genuinely traceable, performs well and makes sense for the garment you're trying to build.


Synthetic Fibres Are Evolving Too


When we say “synthetic fabric,” it is easy to imagine one basic material. But that is no longer the reality.


Polyester, nylon, elastane and elastomultiester are being engineered to do much more than simply make a garment. 


Fibre structure, yarn construction and finishing technologies can change how a fabric feels, stretches, dries and performs.


Here are some of the innovations fashion brands should know about.


Polyester: More Than Just a Basic Synthetic


Polyester is popular because it is strong, durable and quick-drying. But newer fibre technologies can improve these properties further.


Innovations are being used to create polyester with:


  • Better moisture wicking by designing the fibre shape to move sweat away from the skin.

  • Faster drying by helping moisture spread across the fabric surface.

  • UV protection through specialised fibre or fabric technologies.

  • Recycled content without necessarily sacrificing the performance brands expect from polyester.


For example, COOLMAX® technologies use engineered fibre structures to move moisture away from the body and help it dry faster. Some EcoMade versions are also made from recycled resources.


Nylon: Built for Durability


Nylon is often chosen for activewear, swimwear and performance garments because it offers a good combination of strength, abrasion resistance and a smooth handfeel.


Newer nylon developments focus on:


  • Improved durability.

  • Softer and more comfortable handfeel.

  • Better stretch when combined with elastane.

  • Recycled nylon made from recovered materials.

  • Performance finishes for moisture management and UV protection.


For a brand making leggings, swimwear or high-use activewear, these properties can be more important than simply choosing a natural fibre.


Elastane / Spandex: The Stretch Specialist


A small percentage of elastane can completely change how a garment behaves.


It provides:


  • Stretch

  • Shape recovery

  • Comfort

  • Better fit

  • Freedom of movement


This is why it is so common in leggings, sports bras, yoga wear and fitted athleisure.


The technology is evolving here too. LYCRA® EcoMade fibre, for example, uses pre-consumer manufacturing waste to create recycled-content spandex while maintaining the intended stretch and recovery performance.


There are also newer plant-based and recycled-content stretch solutions entering the market. ROICA™ EF is one example of recycled elastane made from pre-consumer manufacturing waste.


Elastomultiester: Stretch Without Always Using Spandex


Here is a lesser-known option.


Elastomultiester fibres can provide stretch and recovery without relying on conventional elastane.


LYCRA® T400® is a well-known example. Its bicomponent fibre structure helps create stretch, recovery, moisture management and shape retention. EcoMade versions combine this performance with recycled and renewable inputs.


This can be interesting for brands looking for stretch fabrics with a different construction or a more durable alternative to traditional stretch yarns.


The Bigger Innovation Is in the Combination


The most interesting developments are not always about inventing a completely new fibre.


Sometimes, it is about engineering existing fibres to solve a specific problem.


A fabric can be designed for:


  • Wicking → moves sweat away from the body.

  • Quick drying → helps moisture evaporate faster.

  • UV resistance → provides better protection for outdoor use.

  • Stretch → allows comfortable movement.

  • Recovery → helps the garment return to its original shape.

  • Abrasion resistance → helps the garment withstand repeated wear.

  • Shape retention → reduces sagging and loss of fit.

  • Thermal regulation → helps manage warmth and moisture.


This is why a fabric specification should never stop at “polyester” or “nylon.”


Ask what type of fibre it is, how it is engineered and what performance it delivers.


For a fashion startup, the smarter question is not


“Is this synthetic?”


It is


“What has this fabric been engineered to do, and can it deliver that performance for the life of the garment?”



Natural and Cellulosic Fibres Are Not Perfect for Every Garment


Natural fibres have a lot going for them. Cotton, linen, hemp, wool and silk have been used in clothing for generations. Then there are cellulosic fibres such as lyocell, modal and viscose, which are made from plant-based cellulose.


They can be excellent choices for many fashion products.


But replacing every synthetic fabric with a natural or cellulosic alternative is not always the best solution.


Why? Performance matters.


Where natural fibres work well


Natural and cellulosic fibres are often chosen for:


  • T-shirts and casualwear

  • Shirts and dresses

  • Summer clothing

  • Loungewear

  • Resortwear

  • Everyday fashion

  • Garments where softness, breathability and comfort are priorities


Linen, for example, is known for its cool, breathable feel. Hemp is strong and durable. Cotton is soft, versatile and comfortable. Lyocell offers a smooth handfeel and good moisture management.


So these fibres absolutely have a place sustainably.


But performance can change the equation


Consider yoga leggings.


It needs to stretch repeatedly and recover their shape. It needs to manage sweat. It may need UV protection. It also needs to survive frequent washing and movement.


A natural fibre may not deliver all of these properties on its own.


Synthetic fibres can have an advantage when you need:


  • High stretch and recovery

  • Moisture wicking

  • Fast drying

  • High abrasion resistance

  • Shape retention

  • Consistent performance

  • UV resistance


This does not mean synthetics are always better. It means the right fibre depends on what the garment needs to do.


Even natural fibres can surprise you


It is also important not to oversimplify the other way.


Natural fibres are not automatically poor performers.


Hemp, for example, can offer good durability and UV protection. Research has also found that the UV protection of cellulose fabrics can vary significantly depending on the fibre, yarn and fabric construction.


Blending can improve performance too.


A hemp-linen blend, for example, can provide good moisture management while retaining the character of both fibres. Fabric construction and weave can make a noticeable difference to performance.


That is the bigger point.


The fibre alone does not determine how a fabric performs. Yarn, weave, knit structure, GSM, finishing and fibre blends all play a role.


So, instead of asking, “Which is the most sustainable fibre?”, fashion startups should ask:


“Which fibre or blend will make this particular garment perform well, last longer and get worn more?”


That is a much more useful way to approach sustainable fabric sourcing.
